Campaign Finance Reform
—Will Rogers, American Humorist, (1879-1935)
The Problem
To understand Campaign Finance is simple enough. By spending large amounts of money in the form of campaign donations (perhaps more accurately called “legal bribes”), large corporations and special interest groups gain benefits from members of Congress. The large donations are made in exchange for the ability to influence policymaking. The well-funded Congressman, in turn, is easily able to gain re-election and preserve his or her position of influence. The principle is simple—you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.
I am strongly opposed to any one special-interest group or corporation receiving disproportionate representation in our house of Government. Our Government was designed to ensure fairness and equality for all members of society. If special interest groups primarily fund a candidate, voters have a right to ask whose interests will be represented—the will of the people or the special interest groups?
The Theory
If Church groups, Volunteer Fire Departments, Boy Scouts and other civic groups can achieve their goals with small donations, so can a Congressional candidate.
In my opinion, taking large donations from corporations and special interest groups is a lazy man's way to run for office. While a Congressional candidate can build a war chest with special interest in PAC money, they become beholden to 'go along with the plan'. Whereas, I will be beholden to no corporation, PAC or special interest group, I will be free to execute the will of the people.
Once elected, I will have a freedom that most elected members of Congress do not.
The ability to be straightforward with the citizens I represent.
As your Congressman, I will not pander to special interest, I will not mince words……you will be provided with the unvarnished truth.
The Solution
My campaign will only accept individual donations and reject all special interest money.
